Every summer, Berlin is transformed into a city of poetry.
Visitors can meet poets from all over the world and discover the most diverse forms of contemporary poetry. Slovak author Veronika Dianišková will also present her work during the 25th poesiefestival berlin, which will take place between 4 and 21 July.
Veronika Dianišková is the author of four collections of poetry. Her most recently published book is Changing the State of Matter (Modrý Peter, 2023), for which she received a nomination for the Zlatá vlna 2024 award. She has also written the collections Labyrinth Around the Hands (2006) and Golden Peacocks Will Disintegrate into Snow (2014). Her book News from Non-homes (Blue Peter, 2017) draws on her experiences volunteering in a homeless shelter.
It is poems from this collection that she will read on 18 July at 7:30PM at an event called Writing class (You can't poet this) at the Silent Green Kulturquartier, Berlin's cultural centre and this year's main festival venue.
The event will reflect on the theme of classicism, which is connected mainly with various forms of biographical essays within the German literary discourse of the past decades. The festival has invited four international female authors who tackle this topic in different ways in their works. In addition to Veronika Dianišková, English poet Fran Lock, Serbian poet Radmila Petrović and Chinese author Zheng Xiaoqiong will be featured.
The festival program includes evening discussion panels focused on socio-political themes reflecting on identity, social classes or history, a poetry night, afternoon talks with authors and Vocations – interdisciplinary experiments between music and poetry.
On the last weekend of the festival, there will also be a poetry market, as well as many free readings and workshops for all ages. The festival will have various sites around Berlin – libraries, gardens, parks, and even a circus tent.
The festival is organised by Berlin's Haus für Poesie (House for Poetry). The Slovak Literary Centre is one of the partners of Veronika Dianišková's performance.
