Asvabaždénie / Asvabazhdenie

A work of grotesque geopolitical fiction that takes us from 2014's Crimea to 2015's Syria. Although the protagonist, a natural skeptic, struggles with pessimism, he would like to remain an optimist.

Middle-aged Marek Pokorný is inundated with negative news from the world, in particular from Ukraine, as well as with discussions on the social network that evidently lack common sense. Grotesque life situations make him ponder whether we can be happy even in times that are not so happy. The book Asvabaždénie (Asvabazhdenie) displays a large number of minor characters: waiters, neighbours, a caretaker, colleagues. It shows that any disillusioning reality can be dealt with with humor. The protagonist discovers that development need not be only linear and positive. That it is possible to talk to a bag and go for walks with a hair dryer, that stars send us signs and that the whole universe is woven from emptiness.
