The novel offers an insight into the contemporary middle class. Some of its vulgarity is already gone and now it can exist in a more cultured form. The author creates a psychoanalytical portrait of a family the members of which see each other as enemies. Their mere existence is a personal affront. The curse of this microcosmos is evident from the very opening of the book: "And now to the most important thing - money."
