The novel presents the climax of a humorous, original and thoughtful work with personal and collective sadness. The book, originally written in German, has been translated into various languages and received the Swiss Literary Prize.
The author uses two memory layers and connects them in the character of the 1st person narrator. The heroine reflects her own experiences of an immigrant getting used to her new homeland and at the same time, from her position of an interpreter, she tells the touching stories of nowadays migrants. Her dispair from having lost her country of birth morphs into the happiness of gaining new hybrid identities in the plentifull variety of strangeness.
