Austrian author Mario Schlembach in Bratislava

Writer Mario Schlembach, who spent 19 days last autumn in the High Tatras on a creative residency organised by the Slovak Literary Centre and the Literary House in Lower Austria, will visit Bratislava and the Austrian Cultural Forum on Wednesday 22 May and will read excerpts from his short story Wander & Maria, which he wrote in Slovakia.

The literary-musical evening entitled Mario Schlembach: Writing about Life will start at 5PM at the Austrian Cultural Forum (Hodžovo square 1/A). The event will be held in German and Slovak, and admission is free. The musical guests are Snežana Jović-Werner (accordion) and Miro Lago (clarinet).

About the short story Wander & Maria: In 1944, nineteen-year-old Wander meets Maria, a sculptor and resistance fighter twelve years his senior. The latter is to help an Italian prisoner on forced labour get back to his homeland. Maria hides Wander in her studio and teaches the young man about art and love. When bombs begin to fall on Vienna and the danger of discovery grows, the two must flee. Will Wander and Maria’s love survive the war?

Drawing on the biographies of artists Wander Bertoni and Marie Biljan-Bilger, Mario Schlembach uses dynamic artistic descriptions to tell the story of budding love, the awakening of art and resistance in wartime.
