Peter Balko on stage in Warsaw

On 23-26 May, the gates of the Palace of Culture and Science will open and, together with the adjacent Defilad Square, will host the International Book Fair, especially Italy, this year's guest of honour.

In addition to Italian literature, however, books and authors from other countries will also attract the attention of visitors — the successful Slovak writer Peter Balko will be one of them.

He will take the stage of the Kisielewski Hall on 25 May at 1PM. Balko will be introduced to the Polish audience by Slovak scholar Anna Kobylinska from the University of Warsaw. After the event, copies of his novel The Island, signed by the author, will be available for purchase.

The Polish translation of the novel by Miłosz Waligórski won the prestigious prize of the Polish literary monthly Literatura na Świecie in 2023.

Peter Balko has also accepted the invitation of the Slovak Institute in Warsaw and will take part in a literary event that SI is organising at its representative premises on Friday 24 May for Slovaks living in Poland as well as for students of Slavonic studies at the University of Warsaw.

Peter Balko graduated in film and television screenwriting and dramaturgy at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he currently works as a lecturer. He works as a television and film scriptwriter and cooperates with RTVS, the Slovak National Television and Broadcasting.  In his native Lučenec he co-organizes the multi-genre festival Medzihmla. He is a laureate of many literary competitions, his texts have been published in the periodicals Romboid, Pravda, Denník N, Revue Labyrint.  His two novels — Once in Lošonc and The Island - have been published in six languages so far and he has been included as an author in three foreign-language anthologies.

Petr Balko's participation in the Warsaw International Book Fair was made possible by the Slovak Literary Centre and the Slovak Institute in Warsaw.
