The novel The Mafia Ballads (Mafiánske balady) explores, within the principles of genre prose, existential dramatic situations of several interconnected characters whose greed leads to their untimely deaths – some are facing it in just a few hours, other in days or months. Hoping that everything will turn out well in the end, the protagonists of the stories, however, make grand plans until the very last moment. They find themselves in critical situations from which they could have backed out. Dušan Taragel is not trying to moralize or defuse problematic situations with humor. The reader anxiously watches the characters' actions and wonders how they themselves would behave in given situations. The novel offers a dynamically written story with an artistic overlap that makes it prime work of literature.
