It takes a lot of enthusiasm and courage to start a book publishing house in Slovakia. With the right amount of both, Peter Michalík established the book publishing house Monokel in 2018. He wanted to publish the most beautiful picture books from Slovakia and the world. As theMonokel’s publishing director, he believes in the power of imagination and in the ability of the paper book to bring us back to focus.
Peter Michalík was born in Trenčín in 1985, and it was in this city that his relationship with books was born during his studies at the Ľudovít Štúr Gymnasium. He later studied at the Comenius University in Bratislava where he majored in philosophy and English language and literature.
The publishing house called Monokel puts emphasis on the visual aspect and value of the book, producing books not only for children, but for all perceptive and curious readers. According to Peter Michalík, its name and logo, from which an eye is winking at us, are about curiosity, playfulness, observation and interest in the world around us.
He founded the publishing house with the desire to bring original and translated titles to the domestic reading public and to promote the work of Slovak authors abroad. This resulted in original titles translated into fifteen languages. The Monokel brand has published popular and award-winning books such as Bratislava – The Magic Metropolis (text by Michal Hvorecký, illustrations by Simona Smatana), the two-volume comic story on Lasica and Satinský, Joyful Report and Day of Joy (script by Peter Gärtner, illustrations by Ďuro Balogh), and the series of illustrated positive stories from around the world, Year of Good News I, II, III (Martin Smatana).
Peter Michalík, born in Trenčín, has lived for some time in Bratislava. Recently, he and his wife moved to Piešt'any, where he continues his creative and publishing activities at the cultural and creative center Arta.
Fundar una editorial de libros en Eslovaquia requiere mucho entusiasmo y valentía. En el 2018, Peter Michalík tuvo esa valentía y fundó la editorial Monokel con el objetivo de publicar los libros ilustrados más bellos de Eslovaquia y del mundo. Como dice hoy desde la posición del director editorial, cree en el poder de la imaginación y en el significado del libro en papel por su capacidad de devolvernos la facultad de concentración.
Peter Michalík nació en Trenčín en 1985. Fue en esta ciudad y durante sus estudios en el Colegio de Ľudovít Štúr y más tarde en la Universidad Comenius de Bratislava, especializándose en Filosofía y Lengua y Literatura Inglesa, donde se iba fomentando su relación con los libros.
La editorial Monokel prioriza el aspecto visual y el valor del libro, pero no produce libros únicamente para niños, sino para todos los lectores perspicaces y curiosos. Según Peter Michalík, tanto su nombre como su logotipo, que nos hace un guiño, evocan curiosidad, jovialidad, observación e interés por el mundo que nos rodea.
Fundó la editorial con el deseo de ofrecer títulos originales y traducidos a los lectores nacionales y con el objetivo de promover el trabajo de los artistas eslovacos en el extranjero, resultando en la traducción de varios títulos originales en quince idiomas del mundo. Bajo el sello Monokel nacieron numerosos libros populares y premiados, como Bratislava – una metrópolis mágica (Bratislava – čarovná metropola, texto de Michal Hvorecký, ilustraciones de Simona Smatana), un libro cómico de dos volúmenes de los autores Lasica y Satinský, Una noticia alegre y Un día de alegría (Radostná správa y Deň radosti, guión de Peter Gärtner, ilustraciones de Ďuro Balogh) o una serie ilustrada de historias positivas de todo el mundo, El año de buenas noticias I, II, III (Rok dobrých správ I, II, II, Martin Smatana).
Peter Michalík, originario de Trenčín, vivió años en Bratislava antes de mudarse a Piešťany junto con su esposa, donde continúa dedicándose a sus actividades creativas y editoriales en el recinto del centro cultural y creativo Arta.
